Google’s Founding Father Sergey Brin Participates In Ethereum Mining

Sergey Brin, an Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL)’s Google co-founder has revealed that he is also a cryptocurrency miner with particular focus on Ethereum (ETH) mining which he does with his 10-year-old son.

Brin is currently the president of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and has been a key part of the tech company since its inception. Michael del Castillo, a reporter at Forbes announced through a tweet on Sunday that Brin and his son are involved in cryptocurrency mining. Brin is the latest executive to join the growing list of traditional tech company executives that have revealed their involvement in digital currencies.

The Google executive is said to have recently visited a blockchain summit that was held at the Sir Richard Branson’s Island. Although he did not talk much about his Ethereum mining experience, he pointed out his thoughts on Zcash’s Zero-Knowledge proofs and even described it as mind-boggling. The Zero-Knowledge protocol can show the transaction and the transaction value without showing the data behind the transaction.

Zero-Knowledge technology has also been implemented in the Ethereum network protocol and Brin seems quite impressed by its application. Ethereum is currently the second largest cryptocurrency in terms of market cap and it has gained a lot of popularity over the past few years. The Google Executive also revealed that he was impressed with other aspects of the cryptocurrency market such as consensus algorithms and the widespread cryptography that has been achieved through the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies.

The Alphabet executive appreciates the impact of cryptocurrencies

This is however not the first time that Sergey has talked about cryptocurrencies. In a 2017 Founders letter from Alphabet, he commended cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum for the role they have been playing in pushing the computing boom in the market. However, Google has not been as friendly to the cryptocurrency market, especially with its decision earlier this year to ban cryptocurrency ads, a decision which was heavily criticized.

Brin’s involvement in the cryptocurrency market is quite refreshing and it shows that more influential people in the tech industry are open to the idea of digital currencies.
